Coolpix 8800 Firmware 1.7 update for Macintosh
What is new/Content DescriptionThis service provides
software for upgrading COOLPIX8800 firmware version 1.5 or
earlier to version 1.7. If the firmware installed in your
camera is already version 1.7, this upgrade is not necessary.
Be sure to read the section, Issues addressed with firmware
version 1.7, before upgrading the firmware.
Issues addressed with firmware version 1.7
- The shutter releases immediately with self-timer
photography using the remote control. Be aware that the
2-second shutter-release delay will no longer be possible
with self-timer photography using the remote control.
- The self-timer can now be used with Fireworks show,
Museum, and Sports Scene modes.
- Camera control using PictureProject COOLPIX Remote
Control is now possible. (since firmware version 1.5)
- 6-GB Microdrives can now be used.
- Pictures were not correctly recorded when taken with
Internal off selected for the Speedlight cntrl option in the
shooting menus Speedlight opt. item, and flash mode set to
rear-curtain sync. This problem has been corrected. (since
firmware version 1.5)
- Command-dial operation was possible while a picture,
taken with Quick response selected for the Release speed
option in the setup menus Monitor options item, was being
recorded to the memory card. This problem has been
corrected.
- Shooting was possible while a picture, taken with Quick
response selected for the Release speed option in the setup
menus Monitor options item and Auto bracketing selected for
the Auto bracketing item in the shooting menu, was being
recorded to the memory card. This problem has been
corrected.
- Errors in Korean menus have been corrected.

Confirming firmware version1. Open the camera
monitor. 2. Rotate the mode dial to SET UP and turn the
camera on. 3. The setup menu will be displayed in the
monitor. Press (up) or (down) on the multi selector to
highlight Firmware version, and then press (right). 4. The
current camera firmware version will be displayed in the
monitor. If E8800 Ver. 1.5 is displayed, the cameras firmware
is version 1.5. Verify that your cameras firmware is version
1.5 or earlier. 5. After verifying the firmware version,
press (left) on the multi selector to return to the setup
menu. 6. Turn the camera off.

This guide describes how to upgrade the camera firmware
for the COOLPIX 8800. If you are not confident that
you can perform the update successfully, the update can
be performed by a Nikon service representative.

Get
ready |

To upgrade the firmware for the COOLPIX
8800, you will need: |
| • |
A COOLPIX 8800 digital camera |
| • |
A UC-E6 USB cable or a CompactFlash card
reader |
| • |
One of the following power
sources: |
| |
— An EH-54 AC adapter |
| |
— A fully-charged EN-EL7 or EN-EL7e
rechargeable Li-ion battery |
| • |
A Nikon-approved CompactFlash memory
card that has been formatted in the COOLPIX 8800 |
| • |

Check the current firmware
version for the COOLPIX 8800 |

Open the camera monitor. |

Rotate the mode dial to SET UP and
turn the camera on. |

selector up or down to highlight Firmware version
and press the multi selector to the right. |

*.*” will be displayed in the monitor, followed by the
version number of the current camera firmware. If the
monitor shows “E8800 Ver 1.5,” the current camera
firmware is version 1.5. This upgrade can be used with
firmware versions 1.5 or earlier. |

the left to return to the setup menu. |

Turn the camera
off. |

Download and extract the new
firmware |
| |
Download
“e8800v17en.sit.hqx” Click the
e8800v17en.sit.hqx link on the download site and
download the file. Once download is complete, the file
“e8800v17en.sit” will be created automatically. This
file will then be automatically extracted to create the
folder “E8800 Update.” If extraction is successful, the
folder “E8800 Update” will contain the following files
and folders: |

Copy the firmware to the
memory card |
| |
The firmware can be copied to the camera
memory card either by connecting the computer directly
to the COOLPIX 8800 using the USB cable, or by removing
the memory card from the camera and inserting it in a
CompactFlash card reader. |

Turn the camera off and insert
the formatted memory card into the COOLPIX 8800. For

USB option in the camera setup menu to Mass
storage. Rotate the camera mode dial to SET
UP and set the USB option to Mass
storage. |

Turn the camera off and connect
the USB cable as shown below. |

installed Nikon Transfer will start automatically
and display the message, “Camera or card contains no

to exit Nikon Transfer. |

automatically. Click Cancel. |

Copy the firmware to the memory
card. |

Copy the firmware to the untitled volume
corresponding to the camera. When the camera is
connected and turned on, an untitled volume will appear
on the desktop. Copy the “firmware” folder from the
“E8800 Update” folder to this untitled volume. |

When copying is complete, check the
contents of the untitled volume. Open the “firmware”
folder on the untitled volume and confirm that it
contains the file “firmware.bin.” |

Connect the card reader to the
computer. For more information, see the

untitled volume into the Trash and remove the memory
card from the card reader. |

Update the camera
firmware |

Performing any of the following actions
during the update could cause the COOLPIX 8800 to become
inoperable: |

Removing the memory
card |
| • |
Turning the camera off |
| • |
Unplugging or disconnecting
the AC adapter |
| • |
Removing the battery |
| • |
Subjecting the camera to
powerful electromagnetic noise |
| If you are not confident that
you can perform the update successfully, the update can
be performed by a Nikon service representative. |

Insert the memory card
containing the firmware into the COOLPIX 8800. |

Rotate the mode dial to
SET UP and turn the camera on. |

Confirm that the update was
completed successfully.

Restore the USB option
to its original setting. If you changed the
